Cyrillic Transliterator
Transliterate Cyrillic and Latin text using GOST, BGN/PCGN, scientific, or ISO 9 schemes.
Transliterate Cyrillic and Latin with standard schemes
Romanization is required for passports, bibliographies, GIS labels, and search indexes when source material is in Cyrillic script. Paste text, pick a scheme (GOST 7.79 System B, BGN/PCGN, scientific, or ISO 9), and get Latin output, or reverse transliteration when the input is already Latin. Direction can auto-detect based on character counts.
Choosing a scheme
- GOST 7.79 (System B): common for Russian technical documents.
- BGN / PCGN: widely used for geographic names in English publications.
- Scientific / ISO 9: diacritic-rich forms suited to academic catalogs.
For general Unicode inspection of code points, see Convert Unicode to Code Points. For Greek text, use the Greek Transliterator.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Ukrainian supported?
Yes. Additional letters such as і, ї, and є are
mapped in each scheme table.
Can I transliterate back to Cyrillic?
Choose “Latin → Cyrillic” or auto-detect when the input is mostly Latin letters. Reverse
mode matches multi-letter sequences longest-first (for example shch).
Does this call an external API?
No. Tables ship in the browser bundle so names and addresses stay private.
