Board and batten siding uses wide vertical boards with narrow battens covering the seams. This calculator estimates board count, batten count, furring strip rows, trim pieces, and linear material for your wall width, height, board width, and spacing.

How many boards and battens?

Boards across the wall width:

$$n_{boards} = \left\lceil \frac{W}{w_b + s} \right\rceil$$

Battens depend on whether both outer edges get a cover strip:

$$n_{battens} = n_{boards} + 1 \quad \text{(both edges)}$$

Material length for boards and battens equals count times wall height. Furring strips run horizontally behind the boards, typically spaced every 24 inches or 60 cm vertically.

Material planning tips

Order 10% extra lumber for cuts and waste. Vinyl, wood, and fiber cement all use the same layout math even though board profiles differ. If doors or windows reduce siding area, the calculator applies a coverage factor so material totals stay realistic.
