Greek Transliterator
Transliterate Greek and Latin text with ELOT 743, ISO 843, or simplified phonetic schemes.
Romanize Greek text with ELOT, ISO, or phonetic rules
Modern Greek names, placenames, and classical citations often need Latin spellings for English prose or database keys. This tool transliterates Greek characters to Latin using ELOT 743, ISO 843, or a simplified phonetic table, and can reverse the process when the input is Latin.
When to use each scheme
- ELOT 743: standard for Greek government and many EU documents.
- ISO 843: close to ELOT with minor letter-choice differences (for example
β → b). - Simplified phonetic: readable approximations for quick drafts.
Accented vowels are normalized before mapping. For Cyrillic sources, use the Cyrillic Transliterator. To inspect raw code points, try Convert Unicode to Code Points.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are polytonic (ancient) characters supported?
Common accented monotonic forms are mapped. Rare archaic glyphs may pass through unchanged if they are not in the table.
How is direction detected?
The tool counts Greek versus Latin letters in the input. You can override with an explicit direction when auto-detect is wrong for mixed snippets.
Is processing done locally?
Yes. No network requests are made for transliteration.
