What Is BPM in Music?

BPM means beats per minute. It measures song tempo: how many beat pulses occur in one minute. Higher BPM means faster music. DJs, producers, and musicians use BPM to sync tracks, set metronomes, and plan note timing.

Beat duration in seconds:

$$\text{beat duration} = \frac{60}{\text{BPM}}$$

Tempo from bar duration and time signature:

$$\text{BPM} = \frac{\text{beats per bar} \times 60}{\text{bar duration in seconds}}$$

Example: a 4/4 bar that lasts 2 seconds gives BPM = (4 × 60) / 2 = 120. Each quarter-note beat then lasts 0.5 seconds (500 ms).

Divide 60,000 by the BPM value. At 120 BPM, each beat lasts 60,000 / 120 = 500 ms.

What is a common BPM for pop music?

Most pop and dance tracks sit between 100 and 130 BPM. Ballads are often slower, around 60 to 80 BPM.

How does time signature affect note length?

The denominator sets the beat unit. In 6/8, the beat is usually an eighth note, so note lengths scale against that beat value.

Can I find BPM from bar length?
