What Is Korean Age?

Korean age is a traditional way of counting age used in South Korea. Unlike the international (chronological) system most countries use, Korean age starts at 1 when you are born and increases by one every January 1, regardless of your birthday. That means your Korean age is usually one or two years higher than your international age.

How Korean Age Is Calculated

There are two common ways to calculate Korean age, and this tool supports both.

Method 1: From Year of Birth

If you know your birth year and the current year, use this formula:

$$Korean\ Age = (Current\ Year - Year\ of\ Birth) + 1$$

For example, someone born in 1998 in the year 2026 would be:

$$(2026 - 1998) + 1 = 29\ years\ old\ in\ Korea$$

Method 2: From International Age

If you already know your international age, the formula depends on whether your birthday has passed this year:

• Birthday already passed: Korean age = International age + 1
• Birthday not yet passed: Korean age = International age + 2

For example, if you are 27 internationally and your birthday is still ahead this year, your Korean age is 27 + 2 = 29. After your birthday, it becomes 27 + 1 = 28 until the next January 1, when everyone gains another year.

Why Korean Age Differs From International Age

Two key differences explain the gap between Korean age and international age:

1. You start at age 1: In Korea, the time spent in the womb is rounded up, so a newborn is considered 1 year old rather than 0.
2. Everyone ages on New Year: Instead of adding a year on your birthday, Koreans traditionally add a year on January 1. A baby born on December 31 is 2 years old just one day later.

When Is Korean Age Used?

Korean age still appears in everyday conversation, social settings, and cultural contexts. When meeting someone for the first time in Korea, age often comes up quickly because it affects how people address each other in the Korean language. However, legal age limits for driving, drinking, and other regulations typically follow international age.

South Korea officially adopted the international age system for most legal and administrative purposes starting in June 2023, but the traditional Korean age remains widely understood in daily life.
