Chicken Coop Size Calculator for Backyard Flocks

The Chicken Coop Size Calculator estimates the minimum coop floor area for regular and bantam chickens based on where they spend daylight hours. Coop size affects bird health, egg production, and predator safety.

Recommended coop space per chicken

Space needs depend on daytime access to a run or yard:

  • Mostly inside coop: 10 ft² per regular chicken, 4 ft² per bantam
  • Coop plus run: 4 ft² per regular chicken, 2 ft² per bantam
  • Free roam yard: 3 ft² per regular chicken, 1 ft² per bantam

Total coop floor area equals the sum of each flock count multiplied by its recommended space.

Example calculation

A flock of 10 regular chickens and 12 bantams with daytime run access needs: $10 \times 4 + 12 \times 2 = 64$ ft² of coop floor area. A square coop footprint would be about 8 ft by 8 ft.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size coop do I need for 10 chickens?

For 10 regular-size chickens kept mostly in the coop during the day, plan at least 100 ft² of floor area. With a run, 40 ft² is the minimum. Free-roaming birds need about 30 ft² of coop space for roosting at night.

How much space does a bantam chicken need?

Bantams need roughly one quarter to two thirds the space of regular chickens. Plan 4 ft² in a full-time coop, 2 ft² with a run, or 1 ft² when birds free roam during the day.

Does this include run or yard space?

No. This calculator covers coop floor area only. Runs and yards need separate planning and are typically much larger than the coop itself.

How tall should a chicken coop be?

Allow enough headroom for roost bars and ventilation. Most backyard coops are 6 to 8 ft tall inside. Good airflow matters more than maximizing floor area alone.
