What Is Body Frame Size?

Body frame size estimates skeletal build using height and wrist circumference. It helps interpret whether BMI or ideal weight ranges should be adjusted for a smaller or larger frame. See also the Ideal Weight Calculator and BMI Calculator.

Body Frame Index Formula

$$\text{frame index} = \frac{\text{height (inches)}}{\text{wrist circumference (inches)}}$$

Men: small frame above 10.4, medium 9.6 to 10.4, large below 9.6. Women: small above 11.0, medium 10.1 to 11.0, large below 10.1.

How to Measure Wrist Circumference

Wrap a flexible tape just above the wrist bone on the hand side of the bump. Keep the tape snug but not tight. Measure on the non-dominant arm if possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does frame size change with weight loss?

Frame size reflects bone structure, which does not change with normal weight loss. Wrist size may vary slightly with swelling.

Can frame size affect ideal weight?

Some weight guides allow a range adjustment for small or large frames, but frame size is only one factor among many.

Why are male and female cutoffs different?

Reference tables use sex-specific wrist and height proportions, so classification thresholds differ.

Is frame size the same as body type?

No. Frame size is skeletal. Body type or shape describes bust, waist, and hip proportions.
