What Is PDF Metadata

Every PDF carries a hidden properties block called the document information dictionary. It stores the title, author, subject, keywords, the application that created the file, the library that produced it, and creation and modification dates. Most readers expose it under File, then Properties or Document Properties. The metadata travels with the file everywhere it goes, and it often says more than the sender intends.

This editor loads a PDF, shows you exactly what its metadata contains today, and lets you change any of those fields. It does not touch the page content: text, images, bookmarks, and layout all stay byte for byte the same. Only the properties block is rewritten in the copy you download.

Why Edit PDF Metadata

  • Privacy before sharing: a resume's Author field often contains your operating system username, and a contract's Creator field can reveal the exact software and version used internally. Clearing these before sending a document out is basic hygiene.
  • Accurate attribution: scanned documents often have no title or author. Adding them helps recipients and document management systems identify the file.
  • Searchability: keywords and subject lines feed document search, so useful terms make a PDF easier to find later.
  • Consistent branding: organizations set the Creator and Producer fields to their own published values instead of leaving the exporting tool's defaults.
  • Archival records: correct titles and dates keep records systems accurate when documents are migrated between platforms.

How to Edit a PDF's Properties

  1. Drop the PDF onto the upload area. The current metadata is read immediately and filled into the form.
  2. Edit the Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, and Producer fields. Keywords accept a comma separated list such as invoice, 2026, finance.
  3. Watch the counter in the right column. It shows how many fields differ from the original, so you can confirm exactly what will change.
  4. Use Clear All Fields to blank every property at once, which is the fastest way to strip identifying information before sharing.
  5. Click Save & Download PDF. The new file downloads with the updated properties and identical content.

What Each Field Means

  • Title: the human readable document name, shown in the reader's title bar and file listings. Use the real document title, not the filename.
  • Author: the person or organization responsible for the content. This is the field most often containing unintended personal information.
  • Subject: a short description of what the document is. One sentence is plenty.
  • Keywords: comma separated topics used for search and categorization. They are stored as a space separated list inside the PDF.
  • Creator: the application that authored the file, for example a word processor or design tool.
  • Producer: the software that converted or exported the final PDF, often a different tool from the creator.

Creation and modification dates are shown for reference but are not editable here, because rewriting them can break signed documents and confuse records systems that rely on the original timestamps.

Metadata and Document Privacy

Metadata leaks are one of the most common privacy mistakes in document sharing. A typical case: someone exports a PDF from their work laptop, the export tool stamps the internal project name into the title and the licensed software account into the author field, and the file goes to a client. Nobody looks at File, then Properties before sending. Editing metadata takes ten seconds and removes that whole class of accidental disclosure.

This editor runs completely in your browser, which matters because the metadata you are cleaning often sits next to confidential content. The file is read locally, the properties are rewritten locally, and the download is generated on your device. Nothing is uploaded, so even documents covered by confidentiality agreements can be processed safely. If you also share photos, the Image EXIF Remover removes the equivalent metadata from images before you post them.

Related PDF Workflows

Metadata editing is usually one step in a larger job. Fill interactive forms with the PDF Form Filler, add review notes with the PDF Annotator, compress a finished document with the PDF Compressor, or combine several files into one with the PDF Merger. Check whether a received document still carries a digital signature using the PDF Signature Checker before editing anything important.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does editing metadata change the PDF content?

No. Only the document properties block is rewritten. Pages, text, images, fonts, annotations, and bookmarks are preserved exactly, and the downloaded file opens normally in every PDF reader.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read and modified entirely in your browser with no network requests. Nothing is stored or transmitted, so confidential documents stay on your device.

Why should I clear metadata before sharing a PDF?

Fields like Author, Creator, and Title often contain usernames, internal project names, or software details that were added automatically. Reviewing and clearing them prevents accidental disclosure of information the document itself does not otherwise show.

How should keywords be formatted?

Type them comma separated, for example "invoice, 2026, finance". The tool splits them into individual keywords, and PDF readers display them as a space separated list, which is the standard format for this field.

Can I edit the creation and modification dates?

Not in this tool. Dates are shown so you can inspect them, but rewriting them can invalidate digital signatures and mislead records systems. Clearing identifying metadata is the common goal, and the six editable fields cover it.

Will the changes survive if I open the file in Adobe Acrobat or Preview?

Yes. The updated properties are written into the PDF structure itself, so any conforming reader shows the same values. Editing the file again in another application may overwrite them, which is normal for document properties.

Can I edit a password-protected PDF's metadata?

No. An encrypted document cannot be opened for modification until the password is removed. Unlock it first in a trusted tool, then come back to update the properties.

Is there a file size limit?

PDFs up to 100 MB are accepted. Processing is local, so speed depends on your device, and the downloaded file keeps the same size as the original apart from the tiny metadata differences.
