What is Pig Latin?

Pig Latin is a language game where words in English are altered by moving the initial consonant or consonant cluster to the end of the word and adding "ay". For words that begin with a vowel sound, "way" is added to the end. Our Pig Latin Translator converts English text to Pig Latin and translates Pig Latin back to English in real time.

How Pig Latin Translation Works

For English to Pig Latin: if a word starts with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u), add "way" to the end (e.g., "eat" becomes "eatway"). If a word starts with consonants, move the consonant cluster to the end and add "ay" (e.g., "pig" becomes "igpay", "school" becomes "oolschay"). The reverse translation undoes these rules to convert Pig Latin back to English.

Pig Latin Rules and Examples

Words beginning with a single consonant move that consonant to the end and add "ay": "dog" becomes "ogday", "cat" becomes "atcay". Words beginning with consonant clusters move the entire cluster: "street" becomes "eetstray", "glove" becomes "oveglay". Words beginning with vowels simply add "way" to the end: "apple" becomes "appleway", "umbrella" becomes "umbrellaway". For the "qu" pattern, both letters move together: "queen" becomes "eenquay".
