What Is a Log Weight Calculator?

A log weight calculator estimates the weight of logs and lumber using green wood density and dimensions. Select a tree species, enter tapered log diameters or board size, and get per-piece and total weight for hauling, milling, and firewood planning.

How Log Weight Is Calculated

Weight equals green density times volume:

$$\text{weight} = \rho_{\text{green}} \times v$$

For tapered logs, Huber's formula uses mid-section diameter:

$$v = L \times \frac{\pi \times d_m^2}{4}$$

where $d_m = (d_s + d_l) / 2$, $d_s$ is the small-end diameter, and $d_l$ is the large-end diameter.

Green weight is the weight of freshly cut wood that still holds most of its moisture. It is heavier than kiln-dried or seasoned wood of the same volume.

What is Huber's formula for logs?

How do I measure log diameter?
