This is the point at which enough chlorine has been added to oxidize all contaminants and chloramines, leaving free chlorine available to sanitize the water. How to Use the Pool Shock Calculator

Start by entering your pool's total volume in gallons. Select the type of shock chemical you plan to use: liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) or calcium hypochlorite (granular shock). Enter your test kit readings for total chlorine (TAC) and free chlorine (FAC). The calculator automatically determines the combined chlorine level and calculates the exact dosage required.

The calculator uses the combined chlorine formula: CAC = TAC - FAC. It then determines the adjustment level: (CAC x 10) - FAC. For liquid chlorine at 12.5% strength, the dosage is 10.7 fluid ounces per 10,000 gallons per ppm of adjustment. For calcium hypochlorite at 65-75% strength, the dosage is 2.0 dry ounces per 10,000 gallons per ppm of adjustment.

When to Shock Your Pool

Regular pool shocking is essential for maintaining clean, safe swimming water. Shock your pool weekly during heavy use periods, after heavy rainfall or storms, when you notice a strong chlorine smell (which actually indicates chloramines, not free chlorine), when the water appears cloudy, or after a large number of swimmers have used the pool.

Always shock your pool in the evening or at dusk, as sunlight breaks down chlorine and reduces effectiveness. Run the pump overnight to circulate the chemicals, and test the water before swimming the next day. Free chlorine levels should be between 1-3 ppm before allowing swimmers back in the pool.
