Calculate Tip From Net Price

Restaurant bills often list a pre-tax subtotal. Whether you tip on the net price or on the amount including tax changes the final total. This calculator handles both conventions.

Tip and Total Bill Formulas

$$\text{tax} = \text{net price} \times \frac{\text{tax \%}}{100}$$ $$\text{tip} = \text{tip base} \times \frac{\text{tip \%}}{100}$$ $$\text{total bill} = \text{net price} + \text{tax} + \text{tip}$$

Tip base is either the net price alone or net price plus tax, depending on your selection. Example: $50 net, 8% tax, and 18% tip on subtotal gives $4 tax, $9.72 tip, and $63.72 total.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Etiquette varies by region. Many diners tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Some tip on the full amount including tax. Choose the option that matches your preference or local custom.

What is a standard tip percentage?

15–20% is common for sit-down restaurant service in the United States. Higher percentages are typical for exceptional service.

How is tax calculated?

Tax is applied to the net price before tip. Enter your local sales tax rate as a percentage.

Does this include service charges?

No. Enter only the food and beverage net price. Mandatory service fees should be added to net price before calculating tip if your policy includes them.

Can I split the bill with this tool?

This calculator shows the full total. Divide the total bill by the number of diners for a per-person share.
