Twist Rate
Calculate bullet spin rate in RPM from muzzle velocity and barrel twist rate.
Bullet Spin from Barrel Twist
Rifling imparts spin to a bullet as it travels down the barrel. The twist rate (e.g., 1:12 means one full turn per 12 inches) combined with muzzle velocity determines how fast the bullet rotates in revolutions per minute (RPM).
Spin Rate Formula
$$RPM = \frac{v_{ft/s} \times 720}{twist_{in/rev}}$$Muzzle velocity in feet per second times 720, divided by twist in inches per revolution, gives bullet spin in RPM. The factor 720 equals 60 seconds per minute times 12 inches per foot.
Stability Considerations
Adequate spin stabilizes the bullet in flight (gyroscopic stability). Too little spin causes yaw and inaccuracy; too much increases drag and can stress the projectile. Twist rate is chosen based on bullet length, weight, and intended velocity.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does 1:12 twist mean?
A 1:12 twist means the rifling makes one complete rotation every 12 inches of barrel travel. The bullet exits with that same rotational rate relative to its forward motion.
How do I convert m/s to ft/s?
Multiply meters per second by 3.28084 to get feet per second. This calculator accepts either unit and converts internally.
Why is RPM so high?
Typical rifle muzzle velocities exceed 2,500 ft/s with twist rates of 8 to 12 inches. That combination routinely produces 150,000 to 250,000 RPM.
Does twist rate affect velocity?
Twist rate has a minor effect on bore friction but muzzle velocity is dominated by propellant, bullet weight, and barrel length. This calculator takes velocity as a given input.
Can I enter twist as a plain number?
Yes. Enter 12 for a 1:12 barrel, or use the 1:12 format. Both mean 12 inches per revolution.
