Reverse CAGR Calculator
Calculate the compound annual growth rate needed to reach a target value from a starting amount.
Reverse CAGR calculations
Compound annual growth rate (CAGR) smooths volatile returns into one yearly rate. A reverse CAGR calculator answers planning questions such as what growth rate is required to reach a goal, or how much you need to invest today at a fixed CAGR.
For standard forward CAGR from historical balances, see the Investment Return Calculator and Revenue Growth Calculator.
Required growth rate
When you know a starting value, ending value, and number of years, the implied CAGR is:
$$ \text{CAGR} = \left(\frac{\text{Ending Value}}{\text{Beginning Value}}\right)^{\frac{1}{n}} - 1 $$
The second mode solves for the beginning value given a target ending amount, CAGR assumption, and holding period.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can CAGR be negative?
Yes. If the ending value is below the beginning value, the required CAGR is negative, meaning the investment shrank on average each year.
Do contributions during the period matter?
This tool assumes a single lump sum with no interim deposits or withdrawals. Regular contributions need a cash-flow model.
Can I use fractional years?
Yes. Enter decimals such as 2.5 years for a 30-month horizon.
