What Is Decay in Rust?
Decay is Rust's cleanup system for player-built structures. When a base is not protected by upkeep in a Tool Cupboard, walls, doors, and vehicles slowly lose health until they break.
How Decay Time Is Calculated
Each material has a base decay duration at 100% health. Lower health shortens the remaining time proportionally. For example, wood at 50% health takes twice as long as wood at 100% before it fully decays.
Default material decay times at full health:
- Twig: 1 hour
- Wood: 3 hours
- Stone: 5 hours
- Sheet metal: 8 hours
- Armoured: 12 hours

Frequently Asked Questions
Do structures decay in Rust?
Yes. Any structure outside Tool Cupboard upkeep range, or without enough stored materials, will decay over time.
How do I stop decay in Rust?
Place and maintain a Tool Cupboard with the same materials used in your build. Repair damaged parts and refill the cupboard before materials run out.
How long does wood take to decay?
Wood takes 3 hours at 100% health on default servers. At 50% health, expect about 6 hours before full decay.
What is decay tick rate?
Decay tick rate controls how often decay is applied. The default is 300. Changing this server setting scales total decay time up or down.
Do vehicles decay in Rust?
Yes. Minicopters, cars, and other deployables follow similar upkeep rules and will decay if not protected and maintained.
