How to Measure Tree Diameter

To measure it, wrap a measuring tape around the tree trunk at this height and note the circumference. The diameter is calculated by dividing the circumference by pi (3.14): d = C / pi.
Single vs Multi-Stemmed Trees
For single-stemmed trees, the calculation is straightforward. For multi-stemmed trees, the calculator uses the quadratic mean diameter method, where each stem's diameter is squared, the squares are summed, and the square root of the sum gives the overall equivalent diameter. This method is the standard approach used by foresters for trees with multiple trunks.
