How Tree Age Is Calculated

The age of a tree is calculated using the formula: age = growth factor x diameter at breast height (DBH) in inches. The DBH is derived from the tree's circumference by dividing by pi (approximately 3.14). Each tree species has a unique growth factor determined by scientists who count tree rings and compare them with trunk diameters.

If you do not know your tree's species but have an estimated growth factor, you can enter a custom growth factor manually. Most common tree species have growth factors between 3 and 5. Fast-growing trees like cottonwood and silver maple have lower growth factors (2 to 3), while slow-growing trees like dogwood and ironwood have higher factors (7 to 8).
