What is the Tree Spacing Calculator?

The Tree Spacing Calculator helps you determine how many trees you can plant in a given area based on the recommended spacing for different tree species. Whether you are planning an orchard, a forest plantation, or landscaping your backyard, proper spacing ensures each tree has enough access to sunlight, water, and root space for healthy growth.

How Tree Spacing Is Calculated

The calculator uses the rectangular spacing formula: $P = \lfloor L / s \rfloor \times \lfloor W / s \rfloor$, where $P$ is the tree population, $L$ is the length of the planting area, $W$ is the width of the planting area, and $s$ is the spacing between trees. The floor function ensures you get a whole number of trees that will fit in the area.

Each tree species has a recommended minimum spacing based on its mature size. Apple trees need about 30 feet of space, while alder trees can be planted as close as 6.7 feet apart. The calculator includes over 30 common tree species with their recommended spacing values. You can also enter a custom spacing if your tree is not listed.

Why is tree spacing important?

Proper tree spacing is crucial for healthy growth. Trees need adequate space for root systems to expand, access to sunlight for photosynthesis, and sufficient water and nutrients from the soil. Overcrowded trees compete for resources, grow more slowly, and are more susceptible to disease. Proper spacing also makes maintenance easier and improves air circulation around each tree.

What is the best time to plant trees?

Early spring and late summer are generally the best times to plant trees when temperatures are moderate and there is adequate rainfall. This gives trees time to establish root systems before extreme temperatures arrive. However, the optimal planting time varies by climate zone. In warmer regions, fall planting can also be successful.

How do I measure my planting area?

Measure the length and width of your planting area using a measuring tape or a GPS measuring tool. For irregularly shaped areas, measure the longest and widest points. If you are planting in rows, measure the total row length and multiply by the number of rows. You can also input the total area directly if you already know it.

Can I use triangular spacing instead of rectangular?

Yes, triangular (or staggered) spacing allows you to fit more trees in the same area compared to rectangular spacing. In triangular spacing, each row is offset by half the spacing distance, allowing trees to be planted in a hexagonal pattern. Our calculator uses rectangular spacing by default, which is the most common method for home gardens and small orchards.

What trees can I plant close together?

Trees with small mature sizes can be planted closer together. Alder trees (6.7 ft), common juniper (6 ft), and Norway spruce (10 ft) are among the trees that require the least spacing. Fast-growing trees used for hedges or windbreaks can also be planted more densely. Always check the specific spacing requirements for your chosen species.

How many trees can I plant per acre?

The number of trees per acre varies by species and spacing. For example, with 10-foot spacing, you can plant approximately 435 trees per acre. With 20-foot spacing, that drops to about 109 trees per acre. With 30-foot spacing (common for apple trees and black walnut), you can plant about 48 trees per acre. Our calculator computes this automatically based on your spacing and area.
