What Is the COVID-19 Waste Calculator?

The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically increased use of personal protective equipment (PPE): surgical masks, N95 respirators, disposable gloves, and hand sanitizer bottles. Most of these items are single-use plastics that end up in landfills or waterways. This calculator estimates the plastic waste and carbon footprint from your PPE consumption over a chosen time period.

How PPE Environmental Impact Is Estimated

The calculator uses published average values for each item:

  • Surgical mask: about 3 g of plastic per mask
  • N95 respirator: about 0.05 kg CO₂-equivalent per mask
  • Cloth mask: about 0.06 kg CO₂-equivalent per mask (lifespan roughly 5 months)
  • Disposable gloves: about 5 g of plastic per pair
  • Hand sanitizer bottle (250 mL): about 50 g of plastic per bottle

Weekly usage is multiplied by the number of weeks in your selected period (1, 3, 6, or 12 months). Cloth masks are assumed reusable for about 5 months; replacement count is included in the CO₂ total. Each active cloth mask is estimated to replace about 5 surgical masks per week compared to an all-disposable routine.
