How to Convert Paper Quantities

Paper is sold and counted in specialized units that go beyond simple sheets. Printers, publishers, and office supply buyers work with quires, reams, bundles, and bales. Understanding these units helps when ordering bulk paper, comparing supplier quotes, or estimating inventory.

All conversions in this tool are based on a single reference unit: sheets. Every other unit is a multiple of sheets, and the exact count depends on the ream type you select.

Paper Quantity Units Explained

• Sheet: One individual piece of paper.
• Quire: A small bundle of sheets. In a long ream, 1 quire = 25 sheets.
• Ream: The standard paper pack. A long ream contains 500 sheets (20 quires).
• Bundle: Two reams bundled together.
• Bale: Five bundles, or ten reams total.

Ream Types: Long, Short, and Printer's

Not all reams contain the same number of sheets. Choose the ream type that matches your supplier or industry standard:

• Long ream: 500 sheets, 25 sheets per quire (most common in the US and UK).
• Short ream: 480 sheets, 24 sheets per quire (used in some European markets).
• Printer's ream: 516 sheets, 25.8 sheets per quire (used in the printing industry).

Conversion Formulas

To convert any paper unit to sheets, multiply by the unit factor. For a long ream:

$$Sheets = Reams \times 500$$

$$Sheets = Quires \times 25$$

$$Sheets = Bundles \times 1{,}000$$

$$Sheets = Bales \times 5{,}000$$

To convert sheets back to another unit, divide by the same factor. For example, 2,500 sheets equals 5 long reams ($2{,}500 \div 500 = 5$).
