Torque Calculator

The Torque Calculator computes rotational torque from applied force, lever arm length, and the angle between them. Torque measures how effectively a force tends to rotate an object about a pivot or axis.

Torque formula

$$\tau = F \cdot r \cdot \sin(\theta)$$

Where $\tau$ is torque, $F$ is force, $r$ is the perpendicular distance from the pivot (lever arm), and $\theta$ is the angle between the force vector and the lever arm. When the force acts perpendicular to the lever arm, $\sin(90°) = 1$ and the formula simplifies to $\tau = F \cdot r$.

Example

A 50 N force applied at the end of a 0.40 m wrench handle at 90° produces $\tau = 50 \times 0.40 = 20$ N·m of torque. The same force at 30° gives $\tau = 50 \times 0.40 \times \sin(30°) = 10$ N·m.
