How Thinset Quantity Is Calculated

Thinset quantity depends on three factors: the area being tiled, the thinset layer thickness, and the mortar density. The formula is:

Thinset is mixed as a 50/50 ratio of dry powder to water by weight. The calculator divides the wet weight by 2 to find the dry powder weight, then divides by bag size to get the number of bags. Always round up to avoid running short mid-project.

Tile Size and Trowel Selection

Larger tiles need thicker thinset layers and correspondingly larger trowel notches. Small mosaic tiles use a 1/8" square notch trowel producing about 2.0 mm of thinset, while large-format tiles over 12 inches need a 3/4" square notch trowel delivering up to 8.0 mm. How much thinset do I need per square foot?

For a typical 12" tile with a 1/4" × 3/8" trowel, you need about 0.005 ft³ of thinset per square foot, or roughly 0.5 kg of dry mix per ft². A 20 kg bag covers approximately 40 ft² at 5 mm thickness. Use the calculator for your specific tile size and thickness.

What trowel size should I use for 12x24 inch tiles?

For 12" × 24" tiles, use a 1/2" × 1/2" square notch trowel, which produces about 7.0 mm of thinset thickness. The larger notch ensures adequate coverage for rectified large-format tiles that require full contact with the substrate.

What is the difference between thinset and mortar?

Thinset is a specific type of mortar designed for tile installation. It contains Portland cement, fine sand, and polymers for flexibility and adhesion. Traditional mortar is used for brick and block construction. Thinset bonds tiles in a thin layer (typically 2-8 mm), while mortar is applied much thicker.

How do I calculate thinset for a shower floor?

For a shower floor with a preslope, measure the total floor area including the pan. Shower floors often need a thicker thinset layer (about 1/4" or 6 mm) to support the tile under foot traffic. Add 15-20% waste for cutting around the drain and corners.

Should I buy extra thinset?

Yes. Add at least 10% wastage for normal installations and 15-20% for complex patterns or irregular areas. Thinset has a limited working time (about 30-60 minutes depending on temperature), so mix only what you can use in that window.

How long does thinset take to cure?

Thinset typically cures in 24-48 hours depending on temperature, humidity, and the specific product. Light foot traffic is possible after 24 hours, but grouting should wait at least 24-48 hours. Full cure takes about 28 days for maximum strength.
