What Is a Grout Calculator?

A grout calculator estimates how much tile grout you need for a flooring or wall tiling project. Enter the tiled area, tile dimensions, gap width, and gap depth to get grout volume, estimated weight, and the number of bags to purchase.

How Tile Grout Volume Is Calculated

The grout-to-tile ratio accounts for spacing between tiles and perimeter gaps:

$$ R = \frac{l \times w}{(l + g) \times (w + g)} $$

Grout area and volume follow from the tiled surface area:

$$ \text{Grout area} = A_s - A_s \times R $$

$$ \text{Grout volume} = \text{Grout area} \times \text{gap depth} $$

Pair this tool with the Tile Calculator to estimate tile count and the Cement Calculator for mortar and adhesive quantities.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much grout do I need per square foot?

Grout needed per square foot depends on tile size, gap width, and gap depth. Smaller tiles with wider gaps require more grout. A 12-inch tile with 1/8-inch gaps typically needs less grout than mosaic tiles with 1/16-inch spacing.

What is the standard grout gap size?

Floor tiles commonly use 1/8 inch (3 mm) grout lines. Wall tiles may use 1/16 to 1/8 inch. Rectified tiles can use narrower 1/16 inch gaps for a tighter look.

How deep should grout be?

Grout should fill the full tile joint depth, typically matching the tile thickness minus any thinset buildup. For standard 3/8-inch thick tiles, a gap depth of 3/8 inch is common.

How many grout bags do I need?

Divide total grout weight by the bag weight (commonly 25 lb). Always buy one extra bag for waste and touch-ups. This calculator rounds up to the nearest whole bag.

What is the density of cement grout?

Dry pre-mixed cementitious grout has a density around 100 lb/ft³ (1,600 kg/m³) when mixed. Epoxy grout is denser. Adjust the density field if your product specifies a different value.
