Plan a Taco Bar for Any Crowd

This taco bar calculator turns guest count, meat choice, and topping selections into a shopping list with per-person and total amounts. Use it alongside our Party Drink Calculator and Pizza Party Calculator when you are hosting a mixed menu.

How Guest Count Works

Enter adults and kids separately. Each child counts as half an adult portion so you do not overbuy protein and toppings for lighter eaters.

$$\text{effective guests} = \text{adults} + 0.5 \times \text{kids}$$

Meat Portions

Ground beef and shrimp average 6.5 oz per guest. Chicken needs about 5.5 oz, hamburger meat about 5 oz, and pork carnitas about 7 oz. Multiply by effective guests to get total meat weight in ounces, grams, and pounds.

Toppings and Sides

Toggle the toppings you plan to serve. Cheese, sour cream, guacamole, lettuce, onions, beans, tomatoes, shells, tortillas, and rice each scale from standard per-person amounts. Most guests use two taco shells and one soft tortilla.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much taco meat per person?

Plan 6.5 oz of ground beef or shrimp, 5.5 oz of chicken, 5 oz of hamburger meat, or 7 oz of pork carnitas per effective guest.

How do kids affect the shopping list?

Each child counts as 0.5 of an adult. Four kids add the same demand as two adults for meat and toppings.

How many taco shells should I buy?

Allow two hard shells per effective guest. For 20 adults that is 40 shells before any buffer you want to add.

How much cheese and lettuce do I need?

Budget about 1 oz of shredded cheese and 1.3 oz of lettuce per effective guest. The tool totals ounces, grams, and pounds for your crowd.

Should I round up meat purchases?

Yes. Package sizes rarely match exact totals. Buying slightly extra is safer than running out mid-party.
