General Estimate Formulas

Total drinks are approximated as guests times hours. Beer is about 40% of alcoholic drinks, wine glasses make up 60% of the remainder, and liquor fills the rest in standard shots.

$$\text{soft drinks} = \text{guests} \times (\text{hours} + 1)$$

Specific Drink Counts

Beer drinkers are estimated at one beer per hour. Wine bottles use the common rule of half the wine drinker count divided by 2.15. Liquor drinkers are estimated at 0.5 liters each for spirits around 30% ABV or higher.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many drinks per person should I plan?

A common starting point is two to three drinks in the first hour and one to two drinks per hour after that, plus non-alcoholic options.

Does this include mixers?

No. Liquor amounts cover the spirit base only. Add soft drinks separately for mixed cocktails.

Why round beer counts up?

Retail beer is sold in whole bottles or cans, so partial bottles are not practical for shopping.

Should I also plan food?

Yes. Drinks pair with snacks and mains. Use our BBQ or ham calculators if you are hosting a larger meal.
