Sum of Products Calculator
Multiply corresponding elements from two number lists and sum the products with a detailed breakdown table.
What Is the Sum of Products?
The sum of products multiplies corresponding elements from two equal-length lists and adds all products. Given lists $a = [a_1, \ldots, a_n]$ and $b = [b_1, \ldots, b_n]$:
$$\text{sum of products} = \sum_{i=1}^{n} (a_i \times b_i)$$
How to Calculate
- Enter both datasets with the same number of values.
- Multiply each pair: $a_1 \times b_1$, $a_2 \times b_2$, and so on.
- Add all products to get the final result.
Example
For $a = [3, 7, 2, 9]$ and $b = [4, 1, 6, 5]$:
$$3 \times 4 + 7 \times 1 + 2 \times 6 + 9 \times 5 = 12 + 7 + 12 + 45 = 76$$

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if one list contains zeros?
Each zero product contributes nothing. If an entire list is zeros, the sum of products is zero.
Must both lists have the same length?
Yes. Each element in list A pairs with the element at the same position in list B.
Is sum of products the same as dot product?
For two vectors, the dot product is exactly the sum of products of corresponding components.
Can I use more than two lists?
The classic sum of products uses two lists. For three or more, multiply corresponding elements first, then sum.
