Moisture Content Calculator
Calculate moisture content percentage from wet and dry sample weights using the dry-basis formula MC% = (wet-dry)/dry × 100.
What Is Moisture Content?
Moisture content measures how much water is present in a material relative to its dry mass. Farmers, food processors, woodworkers, and soil scientists use it to judge quality, shelf life, and structural stability.
Formula (Dry Basis)
The dry-basis moisture content is:
$$MC\% = \frac{W_{\text{wet}} - W_{\text{dry}}}{W_{\text{dry}}} \times 100$$\(W_{\text{wet}}\) is the sample weight before drying and \(W_{\text{dry}}\) is the weight after all free water is removed. The water weight is simply \(W_{\text{wet}} - W_{\text{dry}}\).
Example
A wet soil sample weighs 32 kg. After oven drying it weighs 19 kg. The water weight is 13 kg and the moisture content is \((13/19) \times 100 = 68.42\%\) on a dry basis.
Applications
Moisture content affects grain storage, lumber drying, concrete curing, and pharmaceutical stability. Related tools: Relative Humidity Calculator and Rainfall Volume Calculator.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between wet basis and dry basis?
Wet basis divides water weight by wet weight. Dry basis divides water weight by dry weight. Dry basis values are always higher and are common in agriculture and soils.
Can wet weight be less than dry weight?
No. Wet weight must equal or exceed dry weight. If wet weight is lower, the dry weight was entered incorrectly or the sample gained mass during handling.
How do I measure dry weight?
Oven-dry the sample at a temperature appropriate for the material until mass stops changing. Record the final stable weight as the dry weight.
What moisture level is safe for stored grain?
Most grains should be stored below 13-14% moisture on a wet basis to prevent mold and spoilage. Always follow crop-specific guidelines.
Does this calculator use grams or kilograms?
Any consistent mass unit works because moisture content is a ratio. Enter both weights in the same unit.
