According to their research, the average person loses around 15 socks per year, leading to a lifetime of mismatched pairs. This tool calculates your personal risk index and tells you how many socks you are expected to lose based on your household laundry habits.

The Socks Loss Index Formula

The index is calculated using the following formula:

Socks Loss Index = (L + C) - (P * A)

• Laundry Size (L): Calculated as the number of people in the household multiplied by the frequency of washes per week. Larger households doing more laundry have a higher risk.
• Washing Complexity (C): Calculated as the number of wash types (e.g., whites, darks, colors) multiplied by the total number of socks washed per week.
• Positivity (P): Rated on a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 is "strongly dislike" and 5 is "strongly enjoy" doing laundry. A better attitude leads to fewer lost socks.
• Attention (A): The sum of precautions taken before washing (checking pockets, unrolling socks, unrolling sleeves, turning clothes, and using mesh bags).

How to Prevent Losing Socks

To keep your socks safe, you can take several simple precautions:
