How to Find Your Perfect Sock Size

Socks are a staple of daily clothing, but buying the wrong size can lead to discomfort, blisters, or socks slipping off your heel. Unlike shoes, which are sized in half-step increments, sock sizes are designed to fit a range of shoe sizes. This calculator converts shoe sizes from various international sizing systems (US, UK, EU, and JP) into standard adult sock sizes and children's sock sizes.

Measuring Your Foot for Socks

If you want to be extremely accurate, you can measure your foot length directly. To do this, place a piece of paper against a wall, step on it with your heel touching the wall, and mark the tip of your longest toe. Measure the distance in inches or centimeters:

  • Small Socks: Typically correspond to foot lengths of 8.5 to 9.2 inches (21.5 to 23.5 cm).
  • Medium Socks: Fit foot lengths of 9.3 to 10.0 inches (23.6 to 25.4 cm). This is the standard "one size fits most" for many brands.
  • Large Socks: Fit foot lengths of 10.1 to 10.9 inches (25.5 to 27.7 cm).
  • Extra Large (XL) Socks: Fit foot lengths of 11.0 inches (28 cm) and above.

You can also calculate other apparel and accessory sizes using our Jeans Size Calculator, Glove Size Calculator, and Jacket Size Calculator.

Sizing for Kids and Babies

For children, sock sizes are typically organized by age cohorts (e.g., 0-3 months, 2-4 years) or specific kids' shoe sizes. Since children grow rapidly, selecting a sock based on their current age or recent shoe measurement helps ensure a comfortable fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between shoe size and sock size?

Shoe sizes measure the exact length and width of the foot bed, while sock sizes indicate a range. For example, a standard US Men's sock size of 10-13 fits men's shoe sizes 8 to 12.

What does "one size fits most" mean for socks?

"One size fits most" (often labeled as Sock Size 9-11 for women or 10-13 for men) uses stretchy elastane threads to accommodate a wide variety of average adult shoe sizes (typically US Women 5-10 or US Men 8-12).

Should I size up or down if I am between sizes?

It depends on your preference. For sports or running socks, sizing down provides a tighter fit that prevents slipping and friction. For casual or dress socks, sizing up offers a more relaxed, comfortable feel.

How do I know my child's sock size?

You can look up their sock size using either their age (e.g. 2-4 years fits Toddler Medium) or their current toddler/kid shoe size using our interactive children's section.
