What Is Effective Field Goal Percentage?

Effective Field Goal Percentage (eFG%) adjusts traditional field goal percentage to credit 3-point shots for their extra value. A made three is worth 50% more than a made two, and eFG% reflects that in a single shooting efficiency number.

eFG% Formula

$$\text{eFG\%} = \frac{\text{FGM} + 0.5 \times \text{3PM}}{\text{FGA}} \times 100$$

Where FGM is total field goals made, 3PM is three-pointers made, and FGA is total field goal attempts.

Why Use eFG%?

Traditional FG% treats all made shots equally. A player who shoots mostly threes at 40% contributes more points per attempt than a player shooting 45% twos. eFG% accounts for this and is widely used in NBA and college analytics.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good eFG% in basketball?

League average is typically around 52-54%. Above 55% is strong, above 60% is elite. Centers near the rim often have higher eFG% than perimeter players.

Why is 0.5 used for three-pointers?

Each made three is worth 1.5 times a two-pointer in points. The 0.5 bonus per made three converts threes into two-point equivalents for fair efficiency comparison.

How is eFG% different from true shooting percentage?

eFG% only considers field goals. True shooting percentage (TS%) also includes free throws in the scoring efficiency calculation.

Can eFG% exceed 100%?

No. The maximum eFG% is 150% (theoretical case of only made three-pointers), but practical values stay well below 100%.
