Basketball Game Score Explained

This Game Score Calculator uses John Hollinger's basketball performance metric to quantify a player's contribution in a single game. A score around 10 is considered average, while 40 or higher is extraordinary. For running pace planning, see our Half Marathon Pace Calculator.

The Game Score Formula

Game Score = PTS + 0.4×FG − 0.7×FGA − 0.4×(FTA−FT) + 0.7×ORB + 0.3×DRB + STL + 0.7×BLK − 0.4×PF − TOV. Points, made field goals, rebounds, steals, and blocks increase the score, while missed shots, turnovers, and fouls reduce it.

Interpreting Your Result

Scores of 40+ indicate extraordinary single-game performances. Michael Jordan holds the all-time record at 64.6. Scores below 5 suggest limited on-court impact for that game.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is basketball game score?

Game score is a single-number metric created by John Hollinger to summarize a player's statistical contribution in one basketball game.

What is a good game score?

A game score of 10 is considered average. Scores of 25 or higher are excellent, and 40 or above represents an extraordinary performance.

Does game score include assists?

The original Hollinger formula can include assists. This calculator uses the core box-score components specified in the standard game score formula without assists.

How is game score different from PER?

Player Efficiency Rating (PER) adjusts for team pace and league averages. Game score is simpler and based only on individual box-score statistics.
