Rivet Size Calculator
Calculate the correct rivet shank diameter and length based on plate thicknesses and rivet application.
What is a Rivet Size Calculator?
A rivet size calculator helps you determine the correct rivet shank diameter and length for fastening sheets of metal, plastic, wood, or other materials. It calculates the minimum and recommended rivet diameter based on plate thicknesses and application type, ensuring a secure and durable connection.
How to Use the Rivet Size Calculator
- Select head shape: Choose between button head (general/boiler) or countersunk (lightweight) rivets.
- Select application: For button head rivets, choose general construction or pressurized boiler.
- Enter plate thicknesses: Input the thickness of the thickest plate and the combined thickness of all other plates.
- Review results: The calculator shows the recommended standard rivet size, shank length, and hole diameter range.
Rivet Sizing Formulas
The calculator uses these formulas to determine the correct rivet size:
Minimum diameter: $D_{\text{min}} = t_{\text{max}} \times 3$ where $t_{\text{max}}$ is the thickest plate thickness.
Shank length allowance: $A = D \times c$ where $c$ depends on the application type.
Required shank length: $L = S + A$ where $S$ is the total thickness of all plates.
Multiplier values for button head rivets: $c = 1.5$ (general, $D \leq 20$ mm), $c = 1.6$ (general, $D > 20$ mm), $c = 1.7$ (boiler, $D \leq 20$ mm), $c = 1.8$ (boiler, $D > 20$ mm). For countersunk heads: $c = 0.5$.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose the right rivet size?
Multiply the thickest plate thickness by 3 to get the minimum diameter. Then select the nearest standard rivet size that equals or exceeds this value. The shank length should equal the total plate thickness plus 1.5 times the diameter.
What is a blind (pop) rivet?
Blind rivets, also called pop rivets, can be installed from one side without access to the back of the material. An internal mandrel is pulled through the rivet body, expanding it and creating a closing head before the mandrel breaks off with a "pop" sound.
What size hole should I drill for rivets?
The hole diameter should be slightly larger than the rivet shank diameter, with at most 0.006 inches of clearance. This allows the rivet to slide in freely for proper installation.
Can a rivet be too long?
Yes, rivets that are too long may not tighten properly and could fail under load. Always select a rivet with a shank length as close as possible to the calculated value of total thickness plus allowance.
When should I use countersunk vs button head rivets?
Countersunk rivets sit flush with the surface and are used for lightweight applications where a smooth finish is needed. Button head rivets protrude above the surface and are used for structural and general construction where strength is prioritized.
