Paver Calculator

The Paver Calculator answers "how many pavers do I need?" for patios, walkways, and driveways. Enter patio area from length and width or total square footage, pick a common paver size or enter custom dimensions, and get paver count with optional material and installation cost estimates.

Paver count formula

Paver quantity depends on project area and individual paver footprint:

$$\text{Pavers} = \left\lceil \text{Area (ft}^2\text{)} \times \frac{144}{L_{\text{in}} \times W_{\text{in}}} \times (1 + \text{Waste\%}) \right\rceil$$

The factor 144 converts square inches to square feet. A 6" × 6" paver covers 0.25 ft², so you need four pavers per square foot before waste. Complex patterns may need more material; use the waste field to add 10% or more for cuts and breakage.

Common paver sizes

The most common rectangular paver is 4" × 8", covering about 0.22 ft² each. Square 12" × 12" pavers cover exactly 1 ft². After estimating pavers, use our Paver Sand Calculator for bedding sand volume and the Gravel Calculator for base aggregate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how many pavers I need?

Divide total patio area in square feet by the area of one paver in square feet, then add a waste percentage and round up. Example: 100 ft² with 12" × 12" pavers needs about 110 pavers with 10% waste.

How many 16x16 inch pavers do I need for a 12x12 ft patio?

A 12 ft × 12 ft patio is 144 ft². Each 16" × 16" paver covers 1.78 ft², so you need about 81 pavers before waste, or roughly 89 with 10% extra.

Should I buy extra pavers?

Yes. Most installers recommend at least 10% extra for cuts, breakage, and future repairs. Herringbone and diagonal layouts often need more than running bond patterns.

Do pattern layouts change paver count?

The base area calculation stays the same, but diagonal and herringbone patterns create more cut pieces at edges. Increase the waste percentage to account for pattern loss.

What else do I need besides pavers?

A stable base usually includes compacted gravel, a sand screed layer, and joint sand. Use our paver sand calculator for bedding volume and plan edge restraints around the perimeter.
