Sand volume formula

Bedding sand volume is area times depth:

$$\text{Volume} = \text{Area} \times \text{Depth} \times (1 + \text{Waste\%})$$

$$\text{Weight} = \text{Volume (ft}^3\text{)} \times \text{Density (lb/ft}^3\text{)}$$

A typical 1-inch sand bed under pavers uses about 0.083 ft of depth. Sharp sand for screeding is commonly near 100 lb/ft³. Polymeric sand used in joints has a similar but slightly lower bulk density.

Most residential paver projects use a 1-inch bedding layer after the gravel base is compacted. Thicker sand can shift and cause uneven pavers.

What is the best sand for paver bedding?

Sharp, coarse sand is preferred for the screed layer because it compacts evenly. Polymeric sand is better for filling joints between pavers after installation.

How do I convert sand volume to weight?

Multiply cubic feet by bulk density in lb/ft³. At 100 lb/ft³, 13.5 ft³ of sand weighs about 1,350 lb or 0.68 tons.

Should I order extra sand?

Yes. Compaction and screeding waste typically justify a 10% extra allowance. Leftover sand can fill joints or be saved for small repairs.
