Mass Percent Calculator

Mass percent (weight percent, wt%) describes how much of a solution's mass comes from the solute. It is widely used in chemistry labs because it is independent of temperature.

$$\text{mass percent} = \frac{m_{\text{solute}}}{m_{\text{solution}}} \times 100$$

where $m_{\text{solution}} = m_{\text{solute}} + m_{\text{solvent}}$. Given any three of the four values (solute mass, solvent mass, solution mass, mass percent), you can solve for the fourth.

Example: 43 g HCl in 200 g water gives a 243 g solution and a mass percent of $43/243 \times 100 \approx 17.7\%$.

What is mass percent?

Mass percent is the ratio of solute mass to total solution mass, multiplied by 100. It expresses concentration on a weight basis.

How is mass percent different from molarity?

Mass percent uses masses only. Molarity is moles of solute per liter of solution and depends on molar mass and often on solution density.

Can mass percent exceed 100%?

For a normal solution where solute mass is part of the solution mass, mass percent stays below 100%. Values at or above 100% usually mean the inputs are inconsistent.

How do I find solvent mass?

Subtract solute mass from solution mass: $m_{\text{solvent}} = m_{\text{solution}} - m_{\text{solute}}$.
