What Is Density?

Mass to Density Formula

When you know mass and volume, density is:

SI density is in kg/m³. Chemists often use g/cm³, which equals 1000 kg/m³. Imperial units include lb/ft³. This tool converts mass and volume inputs to SI units before calculating density.

What is the density of water?

Pure water at 4°C is about 1000 kg/m³ or 1 g/cm³. At room temperature it is slightly less, around 998 kg/m³.

How do I convert g/cm³ to kg/m³?

Multiply by 1000. For example, 2.5 g/cm³ equals 2500 kg/m³.

Can I use liters for volume?

Yes. One liter equals 0.001 cubic meters. Select L as the volume unit and the calculator handles the conversion.

What if my object is irregular?

Measure volume by water displacement: submerge the object and record the volume of water displaced. Use that volume with the measured mass.

Is density the same as specific gravity?

Specific gravity is the ratio of a substance's density to the density of water. A specific gravity of 2 means the material is twice as dense as water.
