Cylinder Density

Density is mass per unit volume. For a solid cylinder, volume depends on radius and height. Given mass and dimensions, density reveals how compact the material is.

Formula

$$\rho = \frac{m}{\pi r^2 h}$$

\(m\) is mass in grams, \(r\) is radius in centimeters, and \(h\) is height in centimeters. The result is density in g/cm³.

Example: a cylinder with \(r = 2\) cm, \(h = 10\) cm, and \(m = 100\) g has volume \(125.66\) cm³ and density \(0.796\) g/cm³.

Applications

Cylinder density calculations appear in materials science, manufacturing quality control, and geology when core samples are cylindrical. Comparing calculated density to known material densities helps identify substances.

Frequently Asked Questions

What units does this calculator use?

Radius and height in centimeters, mass in grams, and density in g/cm³. Keep all inputs in these units for correct results.

Is this for solid or hollow cylinders?

This calculator assumes a solid cylinder. For a hollow cylinder, subtract the inner volume from the outer volume before dividing mass.

How do I convert g/cm³ to kg/m³?

Multiply by 1000. Water at 1 g/cm³ equals 1000 kg/m³.

Does the cylinder need a circular base?

Yes. The formula uses \(\pi r^2 h\), which applies to right circular cylinders only.

Can I use diameter instead of radius?

Divide diameter by 2 to get radius, then enter that value. This calculator accepts radius only.
