What Is a Gold Weight Calculator?
A gold weight calculator estimates how much a piece of gold or gold alloy weighs from its shape and dimensions. Jewelers, refiners, and hobbyists use it to plan sheet stock, wire, and bar material before fabrication. The tool applies alloy density from karat fineness, then multiplies by volume to get mass in grams or kilograms.
How Gold Mass Is Calculated
For any shape, mass follows the same relationship:
$$m = V \times \rho$$Volume \(V\) depends on geometry. A rectangular sheet uses \(V = L \times W \times T\). A wire or solid cylinder uses \(V = \pi r^2 h\). Density \(\rho\) scales with karat because pure gold is about 19.3 g/cm³ and lower karat alloys contain more copper, silver, or zinc.
Karat relates to purity by \(K = 24 \times M_g / M_m\), where \(M_g\) is pure gold mass and \(M_m\) is total alloy mass. An 18 karat piece is roughly 75% gold by mass.
Wastage and Material Cost
Melting, filing, and casting lose some metal. If wastage is 5%, only 95% of the fabricated volume ends up in the finished piece. Material cost is usually based on gross mass before that loss: multiply grams by price per gram.
