Create an Instagram Direct Message Mockup

Instagram DM Generator builds a conversation image for storyboards, social media designs, presentations and fictional scenes. Customize the contact name, username, avatar and verification badge. Write incoming and outgoing messages, attach photos, add replies and export the visible conversation as a PNG.

The editor renders a light Instagram-style layout with purple outgoing bubbles, gray incoming bubbles, contact avatars and an optional Seen receipt. Changes appear immediately. No Instagram account or login is required, and this tool does not send direct messages.

How to Build a DM Conversation

  1. Enter the contact's display name, username and status bar time.
  2. Optionally choose an avatar and enable the verification badge.
  3. Edit the sample messages or remove them to start a new conversation.
  4. Choose who sent each message and add optional date separators.
  5. For a reply, select an earlier message under Reply to. Attach a local image when the scene needs one.
  6. Check the live preview, then download a PNG or copy the image if your browser supports it.

Messages, Replies and Image Attachments

Each message has a sender selector, optional date separator and text editor. Incoming messages show the contact avatar beside the bubble. Outgoing messages use a contrasting purple background. The Seen label appears below the latest outgoing message when enabled.

Reply selections reference earlier messages in the conversation. A reply displays a short quoted excerpt above its content so readers can see the context. Changing the original message updates the quoted excerpt, and removing it removes the reply reference. You can attach a photo without text, or combine an image and a caption in one message.

Avatars and attachments accept JPG, PNG and WebP files up to 5 MB each. Animated images are not preserved as animations in the exported PNG. The editor supports up to 30 messages, with 1,000 characters of text per message. Large attachments and very long conversations can increase memory use and export time.

A Sample Design Scenario

Imagine a fictional artist arranging a museum visit with a friend. The first message asks about tickets, the reply confirms a meeting time, and the next message includes an exhibit photo. Use one date separator at the beginning, select the ticket question as the reply target, and keep each bubble short enough to read in a presentation.

The username helps distinguish an account handle from a display name. The optional badge is a visual design element; it does not confirm that any real account is verified. Likewise, the Seen receipt is editable mockup content rather than evidence that a message was read.

Export Your Conversation Image

Download PNG captures the conversation panel without the editor controls. The output uses twice the displayed resolution for clear text. The preview fits the available screen width, and its height expands with the conversation. If your browser supports writing images to the clipboard, Copy image lets you paste the result into compatible design or document apps.

Messages and uploaded pictures remain in the current browser page and are not placed in URL parameters. Refreshing restores the sample, so export a finished design before leaving the page. This layout approximates an Instagram DM screen and may differ from individual app versions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this tool connect to Instagram?

No. It renders an Instagram-style conversation image in your browser without accessing an account or sending messages.

Can I add replies and photos?

Yes. Select an earlier message as the reply target and choose a JPG, PNG or WebP attachment. A message can contain text, a photo or both.

What happens if I delete a message that has replies?

The message is removed and replies to it lose their quoted reference. Their own text and attachments stay in the conversation.

Are the messages and avatars uploaded?

No. The tool processes them locally in your browser. It does not save the conversation when you refresh the page.

Can I hide the Seen label?

Yes. Turn off Show Seen to remove it from the preview and the exported image.

Why does image copying fail in some browsers?

Image clipboard support and permissions vary. Download PNG provides a file you can use instead.
