What Is a Framing Calculator?

A framing calculator determines how many wall studs you need to frame a wall using standard 2×4 or 2×6 lumber. Enter wall length, on-center stud spacing, price per stud, and a waste allowance to get stud count and estimated material cost.

How Stud Count Is Calculated

Studs are spaced at regular intervals measured from center to center (on-center or OC spacing). The formula is:

$$ \text{Studs needed} = \left\lfloor \frac{\text{Wall length}}{\text{OC spacing}} \right\rfloor + 1 $$

The extra stud accounts for the end of the wall frame. Standard OC spacings are 16, 19.2, and 24 inches. Sixteen inches is the default for most interior and exterior walls in North America.

Light-frame construction uses 2-inch by 4-inch studs to build wall shells quickly and affordably. Each wall needs a top plate, bottom plate, and evenly spaced vertical studs. Double studs are required where walls meet corners or intersections.
