Floor Joist Calculator
Estimate floor joist quantity, end joist length, and material cost from room size, joist size, and on-center spacing.
What Is a Floor Joist Calculator?
A floor joist calculator estimates how many floor joists and end joists you need for a decking or subfloor framing project. Enter room dimensions, joist size, on-center spacing, and lumber prices to get joist count, recommended lengths, and a material cost estimate.
How Floor Joist Count Is Calculated
Floor joists run perpendicular to the subfloor span direction. The number of joists along the floor length is:
$$ n = 1 + \frac{L - w}{s} $$
Where $L$ is the floor length in inches, $w$ is the actual joist thickness (1.5 inches for nominal 2-inch lumber), and $s$ is the on-center spacing in inches. The result is rounded up to the nearest whole joist.
Standard on-center spacings are 12, 16, 19.2, and 24 inches. Sixteen inches is the most common choice for residential floors.
End Joists and Cost
Two end joists run perpendicular to the main floor joists along the edges of the floor frame. Each end joist spans the full floor length. Add a waste allowance of 10% to cover cuts, defects, and miscalculation.
For wall framing stud counts, use the Framing Calculator. For shed projects, see the DIY Shed Cost Calculator.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the standard floor joist spacing?
The most common floor joist spacing is 16 inches on-center. Tighter 12-inch spacing adds stiffness, while 24-inch spacing works for lighter loads but may feel bouncy underfoot.
What size floor joist should I use?
2×8 lumber is the standard choice for residential floors up to about 12 to 14 feet span. Use 2×10 or 2×12 for longer spans or heavier loads. Always verify span tables for your local building code.
How many floor joists for a 12-foot wide room?
For a 16-foot long floor with 16-inch on-center spacing and 1.5-inch thick joists: $n = 1 + (192 - 1.5) / 16 = 13$ joists. Joist length equals the floor width of 12 feet.
What are end joists?
End joists are two perimeter joists that run perpendicular to the main floor joists. They cap the ends of the joist array and provide lateral stability to the floor frame.
Does this calculator include span analysis?
This tool focuses on joist quantity and cost estimation. Span limits depend on wood species, grade, load, and local code. Consult span tables or a structural engineer for span verification.
