DIY Shed Cost Calculator
Estimate DIY shed build cost from dimensions and roof type with floor, wall, and roof area and material pricing.
What Is a DIY Shed Cost Calculator?
A DIY shed cost calculator estimates the materials cost to build a backyard storage shed, garden shed, or lean-to structure. Enter shed dimensions, roof type, and price per square foot or square meter for flooring, walls, and roofing. The tool calculates floor area, wall area, roof area, rafter span, and total estimated cost.
Area and Cost Formulas
Floor area:
$$ A_f = L \times W $$
Wall area:
$$ A_w = 2(L + W) \times H + W \times R \times c $$
Where $c = 0$ for flat roofs and $c = 1$ for slanted or gable roofs. $R$ is the roof rise above the wall height.
Total cost:
$$ \text{Cost} = A_f P_f + A_w P_w + A_r P_r $$
$P_f$, $P_w$, and $P_r$ are your material prices per unit area for floor, walls, and roof. Roof area and rafter span depend on roof type (flat, slanted, or gable) and overhang length.
Roof Types Supported
- Flat roof: Simple single-slope or flat-top shed with no gable triangle.
- Slanted / lean-to: One-direction slope, ideal for lean-to sheds against a wall.
- Gable roof: Classic peaked roof with two sloped sides.
For lumber and framing estimates, see our Board and Batten Calculator and Concrete Calculator if you plan a slab foundation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to build a DIY shed?
DIY sheds typically cost $25 to $200 per square foot depending on materials. Wood sheds cost more than metal kits, but building yourself is usually cheaper than buying pre-built.
What size shed do I need?
A 10×10 ft shed (100 ft²) fits lawn mowers and tools. A 12×16 ft shed (192 ft²) works for bikes, workbenches, and larger equipment. Match size to your available yard space.
Which roof type is cheapest?
Flat and slanted lean-to roofs use less roofing material than gable roofs. Gable roofs need more lumber for rafters but shed rain and snow more effectively.
Does this include doors and windows?
This calculator estimates floor, wall, and roof shell costs. Doors, windows, hardware, and interior finishes are not included. Add those costs separately.
What is roof overhang?
Overhang is how far the roof extends past the wall line. It protects walls from rain and adds roof area. Check local building codes for maximum allowed overhang.
