Vocal Range Calculator
Find your vocal range in semitones and voice type from lowest and highest notes with MIDI frequency conversion.
What Is Vocal Range?
Vocal range is the span from your lowest comfortable note to your highest. Singers are often grouped into voice types (bass, baritone, tenor, alto, mezzo-soprano, soprano) based largely on where the range sits.
Note to Frequency Formula
$$f = 440 \times 2^{(n - 69) / 12}$$\(n\) is the MIDI note number (A4 = 69 = 440 Hz). The calculator measures range width in semitones and classifies voice type from the lowest note.
Voice Type by Lowest Note
Bass ranges start around E2 or lower, baritone around A2–B2, tenor around C3, alto around F3, mezzo-soprano around B3, and soprano from C4 upward. Individual voices vary; use this as a starting guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
What tuning does this use?
Equal temperament with A4 = 440 Hz, the modern concert pitch standard.
How are semitones counted?
Each half step on the chromatic scale is one semitone. C3 to C5 is 24 semitones (two octaves).
Can range alone define voice type?
Not fully. Tessitura, timbre, and repertoire matter too, but lowest note is a common first classifier.
