AUDIT-C Calculator
Screen drinking patterns with the 3-question AUDIT-C alcohol use test and sex-specific risk interpretation.
What Is the AUDIT-C?
The AUDIT-C (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test – Consumption) is a three-question screening tool derived from the full 10-item WHO AUDIT. It assesses drinking frequency, typical quantity, and binge episodes over the past year. A positive screen is ≥3 for women and ≥4 for men. For a deeper assessment, try the AUDIT Test Calculator or Alcohol Units Calculator.
How the Score Is Calculated
Question 1 (frequency) is scored 0–4, question 2 (drinks per day) is scored 0–5, and question 3 (six or more drinks on one occasion) is scored 0–4. The total ranges from 0 to 12. Higher scores indicate greater alcohol consumption and elevated risk of harm.
Interpreting Your Result
Scores below the sex-specific threshold (3 for women, 4 for men) are low risk. Scores in the moderate range suggest monitoring and possible brief intervention. Scores of 6–7 indicate high-risk alcohol misuse, and scores of 8 or above suggest severe risk requiring prompt professional evaluation.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a positive AUDIT-C screen?
A score of 3 or higher for women or 4 or higher for men is considered a positive screen, indicating possible hazardous drinking that warrants further assessment.
How is AUDIT-C different from the full AUDIT?
AUDIT-C contains only the three consumption questions from the full AUDIT. It is faster to administer and useful for routine screening, while the full AUDIT also evaluates dependence symptoms and alcohol-related problems.
What counts as a standard drink?
In the US, one standard drink is roughly 12 fl oz of beer, 5 fl oz of wine, or 1.5 fl oz of spirits. Binge drinking is commonly defined as six or more drinks on one occasion for this screen.
Can AUDIT-C diagnose alcoholism?
No. AUDIT-C is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. A high score should prompt conversation with a clinician or addiction specialist for a full evaluation.
What should I do if my score is high?
Consider setting drinking limits, taking alcohol-free days, and speaking with your doctor, therapist, or a support line. Early intervention can prevent serious health and social consequences.
