What Is SMPTE Timecode?

SMPTE timecode labels each video frame with hours, minutes, seconds, and frame number. Editors, camera assistants, and post-production teams use it to mark scenes, sync audio, and jump to exact moments in a timeline.

How to Convert Frames to Timecode

Divide the frame number by the frame rate to get elapsed seconds. Split that into hours, minutes, and seconds, then use the remainder as the frame component.

For example, frame 1000 at 24 fps equals 41 seconds and 16 frames, written as 00:00:41:16.

What does HH:MM:SS:FR mean?

It is the standard SMPTE format: hours, minutes, seconds, and frames. The last number counts frames within the current second.

Why does frame rate matter?

The same frame number maps to different timecodes at different frame rates. 1000 frames is 33 seconds at 30 fps but 41 seconds at 24 fps.

What frame rate do movies use?

Most theatrical films use 24 fps. Broadcast PAL video often uses 25 fps, while NTSC uses 29.97 or 30 fps.

Does timecode start at zero?

Yes. Frame 0 is 00:00:00:00. Production teams sometimes use a non-zero start timecode, but this calculator assumes zero-based counting.

How do I convert timecode back to frames?
