3D Render Time Calculator

Calculate total 3D render time, frames per machine, or machines needed to meet a deadline from per-frame render speed.

3D Render Time Basics

Animation rendering time depends on how long each frame takes, how many frames you need, and how many machines are available. This calculator solves any one of those values when the others are known.

Core Formula

$$\text{Total Render Time} = \frac{\text{Time per Frame} \times \text{Frames}}{\text{Machines}}$$

Deadline Planning

To finish by a deadline, rearrange the formula:

$$\text{Machines Needed} = \frac{\text{Time per Frame} \times \text{Frames}}{\text{Available Time}}$$

If the result is not a whole number, round up because each machine must handle full frames.

Example

Suppose each frame takes 15 minutes, you have 50 frames, and one machine is available:

$$\text{Total Time} = 15 \times 50 = 750 \text{ minutes} = 12.5 \text{ hours}$$

Frequently Asked Questions

Do multiple machines always cut time in half?

Only when each machine renders a similar share of frames with comparable hardware performance.

How do I reduce render time per frame?

Lower resolution, reduce sample counts, simplify geometry, or use GPU rendering when quality requirements allow it.

What frame rate should I use?

Film is often 24 fps, PAL video is 25 fps, and NTSC video is 30 fps. Choose the frame rate that matches your delivery format.

Can this calculator solve for time per frame?

Yes. Switch the solve mode to Find Time Per Frame and enter total time, frame count, and machine count.
