How to Calculate Square Meters

A square meter (m²) is the standard unit of area in the metric system, used worldwide for measuring spaces, surfaces, and land. Whether you are planning a home renovation, buying flooring, calculating garden area, or estimating construction materials, knowing how to calculate square meters is an essential skill.

Calculating Square Meters for Common Shapes

For a rectangle or square, simply multiply the length by the width. If both are measured in meters, the result is in square meters:

$$ \text{Area} = \text{Length} \times \text{Width} $$

For example, a room that is 5 meters long and 4 meters wide has an area of 20 square meters. If your measurements are in feet, the calculator automatically converts them to meters before computing the area.

For a circle, use the formula $A = \pi r^2$ where $r$ is the radius. A circular garden with a 3-meter radius has an area of approximately 28.27 square meters.

For a triangle, use $A = \frac{1}{2} \times \text{base} \times \text{height}$. A triangular space with a 4-meter base and 3-meter height has an area of 6 square meters.

Regular Polygon Areas

Our calculator supports regular pentagons, hexagons, and octagons. A regular hexagon with a side length of 2 meters has an area of approximately 10.39 square meters, calculated using the formula:

$$ \text{Hexagon Area} = \frac{3\sqrt{3}}{2} \times \text{side}^2 $$

For a regular octagon, the formula is $A = 2(1 + \sqrt{2}) \times \text{side}^2$. A regular octagon with a side length of 3 meters has an area of approximately 43.46 square meters.

Converting Between Area Units
