What Is Corrected Reticulocyte Count?
The corrected reticulocyte count (also called the reticulocyte index) adjusts the measured reticulocyte percentage for anemia severity and reticulocyte maturation time in peripheral blood. Formula and Maturation Factor
Corrected reticulocyte count equals patient hematocrit divided by normal hematocrit, multiplied by reticulocyte percentage divided by the maturation factor. Maturation depends on hematocrit: 36 to 45% uses 1.0, 26 to 35% uses 1.5, 16 to 25% uses 2.0, and 15% or below uses 2.5.
Clinical Interpretation
Values below about 2% often suggest an inadequate marrow response in the setting of anemia. Values from 2 to 3% are generally within typical range. Values above 3% suggest an appropriate regenerative response. Always interpret alongside hemoglobin trend, blood smear, and clinical context.

What normal hematocrit is used by default?
This calculator defaults to 45% as the normal hematocrit. Enable custom normal hematocrit if your laboratory uses a different reference value.
Why is a maturation factor needed?
Reticulocytes mature into erythrocytes faster when anemia is severe. The maturation factor corrects for this shorter peripheral exposure time.
How is this different from absolute reticulocyte count?
Absolute reticulocyte count reports reticulocytes per microliter of blood. The corrected count adjusts the percentage for anemia severity and maturation, giving a reticulocyte production index.
What hematocrit range uses a factor of 1.5?
Hematocrit from 26% through 35% uses a maturation factor of 1.5. Hematocrit 36% and above uses 1.0 unless anemia is more severe.
Can I use this for hemolytic anemia?
Yes. An elevated corrected reticulocyte count supports hemolysis or blood loss with appropriate marrow response. Low values in anemia suggest hypoproliferation.
