Walking Calorie Calculator
Estimate calories burned and weight lost while walking based on body weight, distance, speed, slope, and duration.
Walking Calorie Calculator
Estimate how many calories you burn while walking based on your body weight, walking speed, slope, and duration. The calculator uses Margaria-derived metabolic equations for gentle grades and the ACSM walking equation for steeper inclines.
How Calories Are Calculated
For slopes between −5% and +5%, MET (metabolic equivalent) is derived from walking speed using cubic regression coefficients from Margaria's energy cost research. Calories equal MET × weight (kg) × hours. Estimated weight loss divides total calories by 7700 kcal per kg of body fat.
Effect of Slope
Walking uphill increases energy expenditure significantly. A 5% grade can raise calorie burn by 30–50% compared to flat ground at the same speed. Walking downhill burns fewer calories than level walking.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many calories does walking burn?
A 70 kg person walking at 5 km/h on flat ground burns roughly 250–300 kcal per hour. Speed, weight, and incline all affect the total.
Is the weight loss estimate accurate?
The weight loss figure is theoretical fat equivalent (calories ÷ 7700). Actual scale changes depend on diet, hydration, and many other factors beyond walking alone.
What walking speed should I enter?
Casual walking is about 3–4 km/h (2–2.5 mph). Brisk walking is 5–6 km/h (3–3.7 mph). Use a fitness tracker or measured course to find your average pace.
