What the Date Formatter Does

The Date Formatter takes a single date and time and shows it in every common notation at once: ISO 8601, US and European ordering, long and short written forms, 12 and 24 hour times, Unix timestamps, and timezone offsets. Pick a moment with the date and time field, or press the button to jump to the current time, and the whole list updates instantly. Each row has a copy button, so getting a correctly formatted string into code, a spreadsheet, or a document takes one click.

A second input accepts custom patterns built from tokens like YYYY, MM, DD, and HH. The result appears in the card at the top of the results column and recalculates on every keystroke. Everything runs locally in the browser, so the tool works offline and never sends dates anywhere.

How to Use the Formatter

  1. Choose a date and time, or press Use Current Time to start from now.
  2. Review the format table. Every row shows a named format and its formatted value.
  3. Click the copy button on any row to put that exact string on your clipboard.
  4. Type a pattern into the custom format field to build your own layout, such as dddd, MMMM D, YYYY.

Custom Pattern Tokens

  • Year: YYYY gives 2026, YY gives 26.
  • Month: MMMM gives January, MMM gives Jan, MM gives 01, M gives 1.
  • Day: DD gives 04, D gives 4, dddd gives Saturday, ddd gives Sat.
  • Time: HH is 24 hour, hh is 12 hour, mm is minutes, ss is seconds, and A is AM or PM.
  • Extras: Z inserts the timezone offset like +05:30, and X inserts the Unix timestamp in seconds.

Unknown characters pass through untouched, so separators like slashes, dashes, commas, and even words keep working in the pattern.

Which Format Should You Use?

Store dates in ISO 8601 whenever you control the pipeline. The YYYY-MM-DDTHH:mm:ss layout sorts correctly as text, avoids the day versus month ambiguity of numeric formats, and is understood by virtually every parser and database. Use localized layouts like MM/DD/YYYY or DD/MM/YYYY only for display, and only when the audience is known, because 04/07/2026 means April 7 in one convention and July 4 in another.

For machines talking to each other, timestamps matter too. Unix seconds and milliseconds are compact, timezone free, and trivial to compare, which is why logging and APIs use them so heavily. The RFC 2822 line produces the format used in HTTP headers and email, handy when you need to construct those by hand.

To move a date forward or backward by days, weeks, months, or years, use the Date Calculator. To measure the span between two dates, the Find Date Difference tool reports days, weeks, months, and years. When you are working with raw numbers instead of calendars, the Epoch & Unix Timestamp Converter goes both directions, and Find Week of Year answers the ISO week question.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the formatter use my local timezone?

Yes. The date and time you pick is interpreted in your device's timezone, and the timezone offset row shows exactly what that offset is. The ISO 8601 (UTC) row converts the same moment to UTC for comparison.

Why do 12 hour and 24 hour times differ?

The 24 hour format runs from 00:00 to 23:59, while the 12 hour format repeats 1 to 12 twice and marks the halves with AM and PM. Midnight is 12 AM and noon is 12 PM, which the token engine handles automatically.

What happens if my custom pattern uses an unknown token?

Characters that are not recognized tokens pass through as written. That makes it easy to add your own separators and words around the date tokens, for example "Report generated on MMMM D, YYYY at HH:mm".

Can I format dates for another timezone?

The tool formats the moment you select in your local timezone, which is the correct behavior for display. For cross timezone conversions, convert the moment first and then format it, because a cursor moving between timezones changes the displayed value, not the instant.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. Parsing and formatting happen entirely in JavaScript inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or logged, and the tool keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
